Baja California Mexico

Before entering in to Mexico I obtained full coverage insurance. Full coverage for Mexico is not available unless first I had it in the United States.  If liability insurance is all you want you should not have any issues.

Watch out for SPEED BUMPS! Speed control entering each town is by speed bump (s). They are not marked. Not painted. No reflectors. No Nada!

There were many check points. A combination of Federal, local police and Mexican military.  When leaving Cabo San Lucas I stopped at one of many Military stops. It is the only stop where I had an issue. A young lieutenant accused me of transporting weapons.

Baja California Norte (BCN) and Baja California Sur (BCS) are the two states of Mexico Baja Peninsula.

Tecate, Mexico is my entry point. This permitted a route to Ensenada skirting south of Tijuana where much danger lurked. Not that you are home free anywhere in Mexico but this country drive worked well. Ensenada overnight permitted rechecking the rig and my nerves. Driving time is about 1.5 hours.

South of Ensenada is a McDonalds, easily accessible, anchors a strip mall parking lot. In this mall is a cell phone store. I purchased a chip for cell usage in Mexico plus a usb wifi thumb drive.  Online payment and tracking was very easy to use.

It was strange being the only overnight camper in a large RV park. It stayed that way until La Paz and Cabo San Lucas areas.  Many are no longer traveling Mexico due to the increased dangers. I was a Gringo until reaching Cabo San Lucas where suddenly I became an Amigo!

Taking a wrong turn when in route to Ojo de Liebre Lagoon put me in a surface salt mine. It was hugh and I was traveling away from my destination.  A small pickup loaded with workers approached.  I with palms up and shrugged  shoulders got their attention. They spoke suffience english to ask if I were looking for Liebre Lagoon. I followed the pickup to the proper road. Left them with several pecos and smiles. A warm memory.

Whale petting at Ojo de Liebre Lagoon was a fun stop. Boats are small and operators permit ample time for petting whales. I picked at barnacles on one whale. It came back butting the boat firmly. I assumed it wanted more barnacles removed. They are as friendly as they are hugh.

A warm welcome fell in front of us as we approached city center of Santa Rosalia. Here the school aged marching parade waved with big smiles as we sat first up waiting for them to clear. A mining museum includes many mine rail cars and a few locomotives. The French mining company extracted copper and gold here for many years. Most houses are wood with lap siding. Lumber came from Washington and Oregon states by ship. There is a metal church worth seeing. It is designed by Gustave Eiffel of Frances' Eiffel Tower. The church is several metal panels bolted together. Made of metal for protection against African white ants. LaForgue of French mining on travel saw it in Brussels. He purchased and shipped it to Santa Rosalia to satisfy a group of ladies including his wife desiring a Catholic Church.

There is diverse landscapes some with rare cone cactus, no restrooms, no gas stations, no eateries. In the no gas zone locals sell gas from 5 gallon cans.  When you reach Heroica Mulege all this is behind you. Views of the Sea of Cortez adds to the beautiful rolling hillside. By now you will be about 700 miles south of Tijuana USA border. Heroica Mulege is known as the Gateway to Bahia Concepcion which is a large bay within the Sea of Cortez.

La Paz is a large city with many shops including Walmart. A very nice water front walkway. Playa Balandra is a short drive from La Paz and is known for a mushroom rock. A pleasant public beach.

Well Amigo we arrived Cabo San Luas where many tourist arrive by ship. A nice beach, a mall, and several touristry adventures are offered.  At Cabo San Luas I had a counterfeit 5 dollar bill passed in change.
